Hello, and welcome to your Fangirl Tour Stop for July 2, 2009! I am Lariope, your host for today, and I bring you recs from the Potterverse. No, not all SS/HG! In fact, not even mostly SSHG! I tried (and sometimes failed) to keep these short, sweet, and off the beaten path.
In no particular order…
1.Fandom: Harry Potter
Title: Letters to a Young Gentleman
Author: Halrloprillalar or
halrloprillalar
Characters:Harry Potter/Draco Malfoy
Rating:PG
Status: Complete in one shot
Summary: The collected correspondence of Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy.
Why I love it: I’m a huge fan of Halrloprillalar and a closet Drarry fan, and this tickles me to death. Very in character, very funny.
2.Fandom: Harry Potter
Title: Journey to the Place of Ghosts
Artist: art by
massicot, poem by Jay Wright
Characters: Draco-centric
Rating: PG-13 (for violence)
Status: Complete in 16 panels
Summary: Serial art (in 16 pieces) detailing Draco’s attempts to change the present by changing the past.
Why I love it: Beautiful and stark, a real look into which factors allowed the rise of Voldemort, this piece is filled alternately with hope and despair, but always the will to try to fix what’s gone wrong.
3.Fandom: Harry Potter
Title: Rain
Artist:
fanlay
Characters:Bill Weasley/Severus Snape
Rating:NC-17 *NWS*
Summary:Created for Trague to the prompt of “Rain” for the HP_Springsmut community on IJ.
Why I love it:I worship at the altar of Fanlay. This is perhaps my very favorite among her many beautiful pieces, and the first one I came across, so there’s always that element for me of remembering my surprise and delight. Fanlay’s characters always have a deep vulnerability to them that leaves me feeling touched by any pairing she draws. Also, take note of Snape. He’s so…. delicate. *flails*
4.Fandom: Harry Potter
Title: Blue Chair
Artist: Marika
Characters: Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Draco, Harry, champagne. A blue chair.
Why I love it: The first HP piece of art that I bought to hang in my house. I love this for the insolent looks on Harry’s and Draco’s faces. No embarrassment for these two. It kind of reminds me of Maya’s brilliant Drop Dead Gorgeous (now sadly gone from the internet, or I’d be reccing the hell out of it here.) (sneaks in extra rec: You should also really check out Marika’s latest, Muggle. All her work is reccable.
5.Fandom: Harry Potter
Title: The Traveller
Author:
somigliana
Characters: Severus Snape/Hermione Granger
Rating:PG-13
Status: Complete in 11 (short) chapters.
Summary:Hermione has deviated from an obvious life. She has moved down a challenging and divergent, but ultimately lonely, path. She meets Severus Snape by chance one day, and she has some difficult choices to make.
Why I love it: Do you ever read a story and weep because it’s the story you’ve always wanted to tell? This is that story for me. It’s the perfect blend of canon and AU, fate and sheer human determination. Somigliana’s beautiful prose and deft characterization leave the whole thing ringing with gorgeous reality. I love this. Frankly, I think I fangirl it so hard that it scares Somigliana a little.
6.Fandom: Harry Potter
Title: Manifest Destiny
Author:
odogoddess
Characters: Severus Snape/Lily Evans
Rating: G
Status: Complete in one shot.
Summary:Snape's first Valentine.
Why I love it: Odogoddess’s prose is spare and lovely here, much like the little boy she describes. There’s such tenderness to her portrayal of young Severus that it breaks my heart—his terrible eagerness to please, the good intentions crystallizing, curdling beneath the surface.
7.Fandom: Harry Potter
Title: Let Nothing You Dismay
Author:
bluestocking79
Characters: Severus Snape/Hermione Granger
Rating: PG
Status:Complete in one shot.
Summary:This one was inspired by cflower3, who asked for something set at Hogwarts, romantic but not mushy, that paid attention to the little details of Snape.
Why I love it: I am not a fluffer-nutter, not by a long shot, and I fear things that feel too easy, but I find this little one-shot absolutely disarming. Perhaps it is because I love Snape so much, and Bluestocking’s Snape is a man I recognize immediately, and because I so want for him the things he’s been denied. Or maybe it was because it was Christmas when I read it, and my heart swelled like the Grinch’s. Or maybe it is because Bluestocking is so talented, and she can do so much in such a small space, and because over and over again she reminds me that small, perfect details make a story do its job.
8.Fandom: Harry Potter
Title: Snape and Harry
Artist: Umino-aka-Morskaya
Characters:Severus Snape/Harry Potter
Rating:PG
Summary: An illustration of Calligraphy’s fic, “So Lonely Without Me.” Snape and Harry reading.
Why I love it:I love to see portraits of relaxed couples, and particularly when Snape is involved, relaxed couples reading. Umino-aka-Morskaya’s Snape so closely parallels the one in my head that it makes me feel fluttery every time I look at him.
9.Fandom: Harry Potter
Title: Faithful
Author: Potion Mistress, aka
ordinary_magic
Characters:Severus Snape/Hermione Granger
Rating:PG-13
Status:Complete in 3 chapters
Summary:As darkness descends can faith hold true?
Why I love it:I was awestruck by this story, by the reality that seemed to lurk behind it. I love it when authors don’t flinch from the war inherent in the Potter series, and the consequences that war could have brought. And yet there is great hope here, and it mirrors the belief in love and friendship, honor and sacrifice that were a part of the series from which it sprung.
10.Fandom:Harry Potter
Title: On One's Knees
Author:
pir8fancier
Characters:Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter
Rating:NC-17
Status:Complete in 3 chapters
Summary:Five years after the final battle at Hogwarts, Draco Malfoy works nights as a janitor at The Daily Prophet. Harry Potter, recently married to Ginny Weasley, is training as a Healer at St. Mungo's. One wastebasket=one head injury=our story.
Why I love it:Reccing Pir8fancier is akin to reccing Subversa to SSHGers, I know. But I can’t help but admire her stories, this one in particular. She builds the characters of Draco and Harry so successfully, so honestly, that one can’t help but believe that every word she says is true. There are no icons of light and dark here, only humans, struggling humans, and it makes me love them.
11.Fandom:Harry Potter
Title: Now the War is Over
Author/Artist:
raitala
Characters: Weasleys, Malfoys
Rating:PG
Status:WIP to one chapter
Summary: Mingled art and prose, exploring what happened after the final battle.
Why I love it: Though you’d never guess it from these recs, I’m very reluctant about the Malfoys. I think what Raitala has done here is very striking—by combining images and words, and by her juxtaposition between the Weasleys and the Malfoys, she is able to create (in my mind, at least) a more balanced (and sympathetic) portrait of the Malfoys. I am also, as should be obvious, obsessed with the notion of the aftermath of the war, and I think Raitala has the measure of it—the grief, the desire for retribution, the regrets. In the end, she seems to say, no one ever wins a war, and it is a sentiment I very much agree with.
12.Fandom:Harry Potter
Title: Severus Snape Sends His Regrets
Author:
tjwritter
Characters: Severus Snape/Lily Evans
Rating:NC-17
Status:Complete in one shot.
Summary:What do you give the happy couple who has everything? What if Harry wasn’t the only Potter who received a few of Snape’s choice memories?
Why I love it:This is unreserved Dark!Snape, and in some ways a hurtful story, but it feels honest to me, true to the person Snape might have been just after Hogwarts, and maybe even further, to who Lily might have been.
13.Fandom:Harry Potter
Title: The Snape We Love is Unredeemed
Author:
mctabby
Characters: Snape-centric
Rating:G Status:Poem, filked
Summary:[with apologies to the boys i mean are unrefined by e.e. cummings]
Why I love it: This is a recent discovery (thank you,
lulabelle72 ) and it had me reordering and reconsidering my tour recs. In the end, I couldn't leave it out. It's two things at once--due to McTabby's skill--retaining both the haunting lyric quality of the original poem (as well as some of ee cummings whimsical humor), and letting us frankly reconsider who Snape is, reminding us how fanon has changed the character we fell in love with.
